There is so much to do in Lake Tahoe in addition to the usual mountain activities. From ballets and tree lighting ceremonies to visits from Santa, there is a lot going on. The holidays are fast approaching; here’s a guide to some of the events you should check out in December!
Sparks Hometown Christmas
Sparks Hometown Christmas is the only Christmas event in Nevada that has a parade complete with all the local political figures and Santa Claus! This annual celebration is sponsored by the city of Sparks and includes a crafts fair and holiday music. There is also spectacular tree-lighting ceremony followed by group caroling the night before on Friday, December 4.
The 2009 Grand Marshall is Kimberley Locke, who finished in the Top 3 of American Idol Season 2. Along with riding on a float in the parade, she will perform music from her new Christmas CD.
The Hometown Christmas is held in Victorian Square on December 5.
Noel Nights at Northstar
Noel Nights at Northstar at Tahoe Resort is held the first 3 Thursdays in December. Santa will be there to talk to the kids and take pictures. There will also be ice-skating, fire pits, carolers, and cookie and ornament decorating. On December 3, the 35-foot Christmas tree will be lit.
Fire and Ice Party
Fire and Ice New Year’s Eve at Northstar at Tahoe Resort is an annual New Year’s Eve bash. Festivities include live music, fire dancers and fireworks! It is a good time for the whole family!
Holly Days Jubilee in Tahoe City is held in early December each year. Bring a toy to benefit Toys for Tots and enjoy strolling though Heritage Plaza with hot chocolate. There is also a tree-lighting ceremony to welcome the Holiday Season!
Nutcracker Ballet at South Lake Tahoe
The Nutcracker Ballet is being performed in December at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe in the South Shore Room. Peter Tchaikovsky composed The Nutcracker and Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty. Of the three ballets, The Nutcracker remains the most popular, over 100 years after their composition. PeanutCracker Ballet by Sierra Nevada Ballet Company
The Peanutcracker Ballet, The Story in a Nutshell is being performed by the Sierra Nevada Ballet Company at various venues throughout Lake Tahoe in December. Based on Tchaikovsky’s original The Nutcracker, the Peanutcracker is an amended version, family-friendly version. This performance is designed to introduce young audience members to theater; the show is only 45 minutes long and is narrated.
